Design Process:

I work with metal mostly and use an electron microscope for the initial imaging. The colour contours in this one represent data about the structure of the material that is collected at each point of the material's surface. It results in these beautiful maps that tell a scientific story, but I believe can be appreciated by non-academics too. 

I used the image map to generate a material and applied it to your model with some additional texture added from the image. For the imaging it takes a day to prepare one sample for this type of microscopy and another day to fully image/map the surface in detail.
